Theta Informatics LLC Announces CRADA with DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory
Atlanta, Ga. — Theta Informatics LLC today announced that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, or CRADA, with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM ARL). The initial Joint Work Statement under the agreement is titled “Vision-Based Target Localization.”
The agreement marks an important milestone for Theta Informatics following its more than 6 years of private research and development efforts. It formalizes a new research relationship with one of the Army’s leading science and technology organizations. For a company focused on drone remote sensing and geospatial intelligence, that kind of relationship matters.
The work sits in a problem space that is becoming more important across the defense community. In public remarks last year, the former commander of Army Futures Command, Gen. James Rainey, framed a central challenge for modern armies as how to maneuver under constant observation, how to move toward data-centric warfare, and how to adapt faster as new technologies reshape the battlefield. (On October 2nd, 2025, Army Futures Command was absorbed into Army Transformation and Training Command [T2COM], where work on this challenge continues).
That broader shift is part of why drone remote sensing matters. Theta’s OpenAthena™ software is designed to turn what a drone sees into usable location data more rapidly than conventional methods. According to Theta, its OpenAthena™ Core software uses a passive terrain-raycast technique to geolocate ground objects from drone imagery. It combines onboard camera and sensor data with digital terrain models in real time, allowing drones to geolocate whatever they see instantly without requiring an expensive laser rangefinder module or significant time and processing power.
The initial Joint Work Statement reflects that focus. It describes a fundamental research effort, with ARL leading front-end computer vision work and Theta integrating and refining the back-end OpenAthena Core localization component.
“Executing this CRADA with DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory is a meaningful step for Theta,” said Matthew Krupczak, President of Theta Informatics LLC. “We believe the battlefield is becoming more transparent, more software-defined, and more demanding of systems that can turn sensor data into useful information quickly. OpenAthena was built around that problem, and we’re proud to begin this research relationship with ARL.”
He added, “For a small dual-use and defense technology company, moments like this matter. They help validate that the operational problems we are focused on are real, timely, and worth serious research attention. The agreement reflects Theta’s commitment to delivering impactful capabilities to U.S. and allied warfighters through public and private sector partnership”
